Rita Evelyn Dorsey

Rita Evelyn Dorsey passed away at home with family on January 17, 2024 of natural causes.  Rita was born on September 19, 1928 to Walter and Mary Derda and remained a lifelong resident of South Bend. Rita was preceded in death by her parents as well as her brothers, Stanley and Ervin, sister, Dorothy, and grandchild, Christopher Niedbalski. On September 22nd, 1952, Rita married the love of her life, Burel Dorsey. Burel passed away on December 7, 2006.

Rita is survived by her children, Linda Dorsey, Colleen Dorsey (Les Niedbalski), Peggy Dorsey (Michael Douglas), and Alex (Norman) Dorsey; nine grandchildren, Sara Niedbalski, Mariah Niedbalski (Alex Marsh), Noah Niedbalski (Damaris Alarcon), Dylan Dorsey, Jess Dorsey, Nathan Lang (Megan Lang), Katelin Lang, Kennedy Douglas (John Kroetz), and Benjamin (Lauren) Douglas and well as four great-grandchildren, Kate and Lilly Dorsey and Vera and Milan Niedbalski; and her sister, Eleanor.

Rita enjoyed the outdoors. She loved working in her garden and watching birds come to her feeders. She had many pets over the years, her dogs, cats, and parakeets. Rita’s Maltese Molly was at her side when she passed. Rita loved horses and rode often as a child; she was going to ride again for her ninetieth birthday until a stroke canceled those plans. Rita enjoyed listening to the classic stars of Country and Western music and the Grand Ole Opry, often singing aloud to them. Rita was an avid reader and followed world events. She was kind, caring and had a great sense of humor. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and they loved her.
