Macario "Mac" Soto

Macario "Mac" Soto, 98, of Crumstown, passed away with his family by his side on June 07, 2026 at his daughter’s home in Elkhart.

Mac was born on October 02, 1927 in McAllen, TX to the late Isaac and Maria Susana (Guzman) Soto.

On December 2, 1954, Mac married the love his life, Opal Louise (Briggs) Soto, she preceded him in death. He then married, Irma Thompson, she also preceded him in death. Currently, he is married to Betty Soto, she survives. Mac is also preceded in death by a son, Marcario Soto, Jr., a step-son, Donald Konopinski; granddaughter, Leslie Maciulski; sister, Fela Doniez, and brothers, Carlos Soto, Eliseo Soto, and Leonel Soto. 

Left to cherish their memories of Mac are his children, Gary Stansbury, Judy (Soto) Maciulski, Susana (Soto) Weesner, and Jan (Jim) Madden; grandchildren, Kelly (Nikki) Stansbury, John (Kim) Konopinski, Niki Konopinski, Christina (Ken) Blazier, Theresa Soto; many great and great-great-grandchildren; and brothers, Nieves Soto, Isaac (Elva) Soto.

In his younger years, Mac worked for the state of Texas as a land surveyor, then moved to Michigan as a migrant worker. He then he moved to South Bend to work for Colbert’s Home Builders. Finally, he worked for 34 years for New York Central, Penn Central, and Conrail Railroads until retiring in 1986. Mac drove and built vehicles for the Demolition Derby at the South Bend Motor Speedway. He liked farming, gardening, fishing, and fixing things. He was a very handy man; he loved helping friends and family. Mac also loved travelling to visit family and friends. He accepted people from all backgrounds and judged them by their character. Mac was a very loving man who always made sure his family was well provided for. They will cherish their memories of him and he will be greatly missed.  

Visitation will be 3:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday, June 11, 2026 and 11:30am – 1:30pm on Friday, June 12, 2026 with a Funeral Service beginning at 1:30pm at St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Rd, South Bend, IN. Burial will follow at South Lawn Cemetery, South Bend, IN.
