Joseph B. Schopmeyer, 82, of South Bend, passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2023. He was born on April 23, 1941, in Hamilton, OH, to the late Joseph C. and Magdalen M. (Becker) Schopmeyer.
Joe grew up in Hamilton, OH, and was the oldest of seven children. He suffered from polio as a child. He graduated from Hamilton Catholic High School in 1959 and from The Athenaeum of Ohio in Cincinnati with a degree in theology. He worked at Citizens Bank in Hamilton, OH, as their first programmer analyst. Joe married Ann Haizman on January 21, 1967, at St. Ann Catholic Church, and they spent a wonderful fifty-six and a half years together. After moving to South Bend in 1969, Joe worked in IT at Associates Financial Services for 35 years.
Joe was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church for over 50 years, where he served in numerous roles including lector, choir member, school board president, and bingo worker. He was an active member of the Holy Family conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Joe and Ann co-chaired the car raffle at the annual Holy Family Festival for many years. Joe was a 4th degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 5570 for over 50 years, serving as newsletter editor, financial secretary and Grand Knight during his time as a member.
Joe was an avid Notre Dame and Cincinnati Reds fan. He ushered at Notre Dame football games for almost 30 years. He played in the Associates golf league and read the newspaper for the visually impaired as a volunteer for Indiana Reading and Information Services.
After retiring in 2004, Joe volunteered as website manager for the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Joseph County. He enjoyed flower gardening and at one time had over 100 varieties of daylilies in his yard.
Joe will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Ann; children, Jenny (Roy) Byerly of Indianapolis; Greg (Sarah) Schopmeyer of Gilbert, AZ; Bryan (Michele) Schopmeyer of Hudson, OH; and Eric (Megan) Schopmeyer of Granger; twelve grandchildren, Jeff, Joe (Marge) and Erin of Indianapolis; Josh and Gabby of Gilbert, AZ; Anna, Maddy and Kate of Hudson, OH; and Tyler, Magdalene, William and Benjamin of Granger; and two sisters, Alberta Guckenberger and Madonna Vance, both of Hamilton, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be held from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 Mayflower Rd, where a rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 Mayflower Rd. Following Mass, his remains will be buried at Czarnecki Memorial Gardens at Saint Joseph Cemetery.
