Evelyn Frances Ann (Harvey) Sobol passed away peacefully at her long-time home in South Bend, Indiana. Eve was surrounded by family in her final days.
Born September 13, 1931 in Victoria BC, the daughter of Frederick Wilton and Marguerite Alberta (Mellon) Harvey, she received an undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia and a Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Washington in Seatle. Eve met her future husband, Dr. Zbigniew W. Sobol in Seattle, and they were married in New York City in 1956 before moving to Elkhart and then South Bend. While Dr. Sobol built his orthopedic practice Eve raised their four children.
Throughout her life, Eve enjoyed travelling, frequently returning to Victoria, B.C., she also visited Poland and Europe on several occasions and formed lasting friendships with international friends. Eve and her husband also hosted international travelers, young people, and occasional refugees, in her home. Eve strove to bring the beauty of her home isle’s flora to Indiana by cultivating garden beds and maintaining a vibrant Christmas season poinsettia display well into the spring.
For many years Eve supervised the South Bend Public Library’s Homebound program. She stayed active later in life as an instructor at the Forever Learning Institute and regularly met with her “iPad Ladies” where she enjoyed teaching others how to use the latest technology. Her love of reading and technology were manifest in her work transcribing over 40 classic texts as a contributor to Project Gutenberg.
Eve was preceded in death by her brother, James W. Harvey, and her husband, Zbigniew. She is survived by four children: Stefan, Christine Burlingame (Jerome D’Hoore), Peter, and Andrew (Bethany), 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchilden, and her best friend Emilia Wojtulewicz of Kalisz, PL.
A visitation will be held Sunday, November 24th, 1-3 pm, at St. Joseph’s funeral home, 824 S. Mayflower Dr in South Bend.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Eve’s name to the Forever Learning Institute or your local public library.
