Ernest Strychalski

Ernest “Ernie Strike” Strychalski, 95, passed away at home on Friday, December 15, 2023 surrounded by his loving family.

Ernie was born August 24, 1928 in South Bend to the late Anthony and Helen (Krzyzaniak) Strychalski. He is also preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Leslie Strychalski; infant grandchildren, Erin & Adam Strychalski; brothers, Richard & Daniel Strychalski; and his beloved dog, Ollie.

On January 27, 1962, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Ernest married his loving wife of 61 years, Sandra (Haisley) Strychalski. She survives along with their son, Douglas Strychalski; grandchildren, Garett & Regan Strychalski; and several nieces and nephews.

Ernie graduated from South Bend Catholic High School. He proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion 357 for many years. Ernie worked for Studebaker until closing, Dr. Pepper Bottling, then went into sales for Hamilton Harris and Elkhart Wholesale. Ernie played tenor sax professionally all over the Michiana area from the age of 13 to his early 70's. “Ernie Strike” was well known on the West Side for playing in bands such as the Dick Strike Orchestra, The One, Two, Trio, and his own band for many years. Music and classic cars were his passions. Most of all he loved his family.

The family would like to thank Dr. Christopher Hall, Dr. Syed Rizvi and Caring Cove Hospice for the care and compassion given to Ernest.

Visitation for Ernest will be 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with a MIlitary Honors service at 4:00 pm and the Funeral Service at 7:00 pm, on Thursday, December 21, 2023 in St. Joseph Funeral Home.
