Elizabeth Ann Franklin (formerly Elyse Bontrager) passed away in her home after a cardiac event on Monday, December 22, 2025.
She was the beloved daughter of Dr. Robert and Mrs. Joanne Franklin, and a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Elizabeth is survived by her children, Eric Gordon and Jessica Beinart; her son-in-law, Steven Beinart; her treasured grandchildren, Payton and Darcy Beinart; and her siblings, James Franklin and Mitzi Bishoff.
Elizabeth was a proud graduate of Indiana University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Health Sciences. Her education reflected her lifelong concern for people, justice, and the well-being of others.
An activist at heart, Elizabeth was most proud of her work advocating for social and environmental causes. For her most recent involvement, she joined the cause at Standing Rock, providing mental health support during the protests. From there she spent years in the trench with the Water Protectors, most recently in Flint, MI. She believed deeply in standing up for what was right, even when it was difficult, and she lived her values with conviction.
Known as a rebel in spirit, Elizabeth approached life with independence, courage, and authenticity. She was unafraid to question systems, speak truth, and live on her own terms. At the same time, she carried a deep compassion for those around her and a profound love for her family and dog, Bentley.
Elizabeth’s legacy lives on through her children and grandchildren, in the causes she championed, and in the many lives she touched through her strength, loyalty, and unwavering sense of justice. She will be remembered for her passion, her heart, and her fierce love.
There will be a Celebration of Life held at a later date. Please contact Eric or Jessica for more details. St. Joseph Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
