Daniel (Danny) Meller Obituary

Daniel Leo Meller, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, son, brother, and friend, passed away at home on June 7, 2026.

Born on August 18, 1942, to the late Leo and Mary Meller, Danny lived a life defined by faith, service to others, hard work, humor, and deep love for his family. He married Patricia Niedbala on June 23, 1961, and together they shared more than 64 years of life together blessed with many memories.

Danny was a proud father to Randy, and Michael. Danny is survived by his wife, Patricia; his children, Randy (Annette) Meller, Michael (Tim) Meller; his grandson, Riley (Tina) Meller and Chris (Tiffany) Dresbach; his great grandchildren, Jazzy and Abby Meller and Eden, in addition to his sister; Chris (Ralph) Kyle.

Danny and Patricia started their journey as childhood neighbors and schoolmates at St. Cashmir’s. Following their wedding they started a family in California while Danny was serving in the Air Force as a fire truck mechanic, where he learned skills to fix just about anything mechanical.

Upon returning to their hometown of South Bend, Danny joined the South Bend Fire Department as a firefighter, rising to the rank of Fire Captain and working with many of his SBFD brothers at several locations around the city.  In addition, he and Patricia ran their own trucking company.  After 35 years of dedication to the South Bend community, Danny retired from the fire department.  He eventually returned to the City of South Bend with a key role as a liaison between the fire department and the fire department garage.

Danny will be remembered for his quick wit, strong character, and gift for bringing laughter to those around him. He believed there was little in life that could not be fixed with a good bottle of glue and determination, and he was known for sharing both stories and wisdom in his own unforgettable way.

Many memories were created throughout the years, spending time fishing with his grandson, Riley, his brother-in-law, Ralph, and his best friend Jerry Budzin

Every night after dinner, Patricia and Danny would gather at the dining room table, for a few casual hands of 313—or Euchre… with many laughs…

Danny will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his wisdom, humor, and unwavering love for his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the memories, the laughter, and the many lessons he leaves behind.

Danny's family will be holding a visitation from 10:30am to 12pm for him at St. Casimir Catholic Church, 1302 W Dunham St, South Bend, IN 46619, on Friday, with a Memorial Mass starting at 12 pm. Immediately following the Mass, the family will be hosting a luncheon.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who chose purchase masses in honor of Danny or donate to Raclin House Center of Hospice care.
