Daniel Paul Powell

Daniel Paul Powell, 71, went home to be with the Lord on January 29, 2025, in South Bend, IN, surrounded by family members.  He was born on October 2, 1953, in St. Louis, MO.

Daniel is survived by his sons Phillip Powell of Gary, IN, and Adam Powell of South Bend, IN; brothers Thomas Powell (Laurie) of Hickory, NC, Sam Powell of Edwardsburg, MI, Joseph Powell of Mishawaka, IN; and sisters Diana Caldwell (Bobby Lee) of Osceola, IN, Kathryn Koen (Gary) of Waterloo IL, Rita Bagnall (Robert) of South Bend, IN, Mary Gamache (Steven) of South Bend, IN, Cecilia Brendel (Michael) of Centerville, OH, and Patricia DeGeyter of Mishawaka, IN; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Daniel was preceded in death by his loving wife and high school sweetheart Mary (nee Hopkins) of 21 years, his parents Gaylord and Josephine (nee Lamantia) Powell, his brother Jerome Powell, and his brother-in-law Matthew John DeGeyter.

Daniel graduated from Cahokia High School in 1971, where he was a state of Illinois wrestling champion.  He also took courses at Indiana University of South Bend.  He was a retired zookeeper at Potawatomi Zoo in South Bend, where he worked for more than 40 years and specialized in primates and otters.  Deeply loved by his family, Daniel enjoyed going on adventurous excursions, like whitewater rafting, hiking, biking, camping, kayaking and fishing.
