Obituary

“Beautiful Betty”.  Her high school yearbook called her a “tiny treasure”, and that she was always smiling and giving the best hugs to everyone she met.

Betty J. Urbanski, 96 years old, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, September 05, 2023 in Southfield Village.

Betty was born on March 08, 1927 in to the late Willis & Loretta (Rosinski) Brown. On April 17, 1948 Betty married her loving husband of 75 years, Robert Urbanski, who preceded her in death on May 30, 2023.  She is also preceded in death by a son, Stephen Urbanski; a daughter, Patricia Urbanski; and two grandchildren, Jacob Robert and Lindsay Marie Axelberg; and two great-grandchildren, Raven Mollison and Wyatt Rudd.

Left to cherish the memory of Betty are her children, Michaelene (Charles) Feyos, David (Jena) Urbanski, Mary Jo (Robert) Grant, and Joseph (Andrea Popielski) Urbanski; and a special daughter, Deborah Carillo. She was also blessed with nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Following high school, Betty took a huge leap and moved to Chicago during WWII.  She lived in a women’s boarding house and worked in the Time-Life-Building.  She loved Chicago and never passed up a chance to return. Visiting home one weekend for a dance, she met the love of her life, Bob Urbanski.  That was the beginning of 75 years of travel, especially cruises, dancing and collecting friends from all over the world.  She was never one to sit still.

Betty loved brownies with extra frosting or just eating frosting from the can.  She was an avid reader and volunteered for the St. Joseph County Public Library for over 30 years.  She and Bob also volunteered for Camp Evergreen, a summer day camp for grieving children and teens. They were members of St. Matthew Cathedral Parish.

Another of Betty’s claims to fame was her crochet scrubbies and bottle holders.  She freely shared them as gifts with friends and family alike.

Betty was very happy until the end, but not a day went by that she didn’t miss Bob.  Now they can dance through eternity in heaven.  She will be truly missed by her family and friends.

A Private Service will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held for Betty and Bob at a later date. St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., South Bend, IN. is assisting the family.

Donations in honor of Betty J. Urbanski may be made out to the Sister Maura Brannick Health Center, 326 S. Chapin Street, South Bend, IN 46601 or to Camp Evergreen c/o Hospice Foundation, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka 46545.
