South Bend – Gertrude B. Matuszak, 93, passed away at 7:18am on Monday, March 1, 2010 in Healthwin Specialized Care.
Gertrude was born on February 13, 1917 in Gary, IN, to the late Lawrence and Maryann (Winter) Grembowicz. On July 4, 1938 Gertrude married Joseph Matuszak and he passed away on June 2, 1984. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Jane, Helen, and Stephanie; and brothers, John and Matt.
Gertrude is survived by her children, Judy (Kenneth) Conner and Robert (Sandra) Matuszak all of South Bend; grandchildren, Rachelle (David) Mihalko of Charlotte, N.C., Pamela (Robert) Hruskovich of Niles, MI, Tammy (Richard) Steinike of Granger, and Renae (Matt) Peters of Virginia Beach, VA; great-grandchildren, Logan and Morgan Steinike, Cameron and Evan Peters, Ryan and Connor Hruskovich, and Brandon and Abby Mihalko; and ten nieces and nephews.
Gertrude worked at Robertsons, basement hosiery, as a sales clerk for 36 years. She was a member of the St. John’s, St. Casimir, St. Stanislaus, and St. Adalbert’s Retiree Clubs, and the ZB Falcon Nest 80. She enjoyed Bingo, spending time with family, grand kids, and great grand kids. Gertrude liked playing the one armed bandits at the Blue Chip Casino, and treasured the memories of It’s a Small World at Disney. Her motto was “everyone should mingle and have a good sense of humor”.
Visitation will be from 3:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday, March 4, 2010 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:30pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Friday, March 5, 2010 in St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Catholic Church or Healthwin Specialized Care.
